[xubuntu] 22.04: How to determine what icon is being used here so I can change it?

$

I'm running Xubuntu 22:04 and I'm using this Windows 10 icon theme.

This is GNOME DIsks and as you can see, there is an error. The icon used here is blurry. Since the developer for this icon theme doesn't actively support this anymore, I'd like to fix it myself. The icon theme is installed in "/home/ardouronerous/.icons/Windows-10-master/" and the icon image file is somewhere in this directory, and I'd like to know the location so I can replace it.

Is there a terminal command to determine the location of the icon image file used inside GNOME Disks? Thanks.

[ubuntu] Would this card reader work on Ubuntu 20.04?

I bought a china junk memory card reader from Meijers. It would not do anything, wouldn't connect to my computer as far as I could tell. Now I have found another and I wonder if anyone has used it or if they know if it would work. Does a card reader require manual mounting? I notice that NONE of the card readers say they are Linux compatible, is this an important issue or should they all work?
I don't know why they say that a card reader is compatible with Apple or Mac, etc...aren't they just an pin configuration adapter?

CSM support

Every time I use windows 10 and then reboot to ubuntu, CSM support in bios changes from disable to enable and I can't boot to ubuntu.
Using boot repair I receive the message:
modprobe: FATAL: Module efivars not found in directory /lib/modules/6.2.0-26-generic
ls: cannot access '/sys/firmware/efi/vars': No such file or directory

but boot repair can't remove the problem

Streaming platforms designers are all racists

Of course I hope this is not the case :).

But one could wonder. In many parts of the world, internet connections are shaky at best. Where I am, I cannot stream anything higher than 144p. Even at 144p, the video sometimes stops until the browser receives more data. But most streaming sites advertise "full HD", as if that was something to be proud of, as if this was not something excluding people in Africa and elsewhere...

I tested the first 20 streaming sites listed in https://privacysavvy.com/geoblocking...vies-tv-shows/

It lists the supposedly 57 Best Free Online Movie Streaming Sites in July 2024. NONE of the first 20 functioned. About half are "US only". I didn't use any proxy, my connection is slow enough as it is. Even some illegal sites seem to be "US only" - crazy! If they are anyway illegal, why should they care where you stream from???

I was not looking for any illegal streaming, a few black-and-white movies, long since fallen in the public domain, would have made me happy. As long as could watch them in 144p resolution. Couldn't find any.

It's got to be some kind of conspiration, lol

Install Stick and full system on a USB

Dear All,

I have Ubuntu on ...

a.) an install-stick for installing or trying out a system from a USB-stick
b.) A live-stick with a full-running Ubuntu (i.e. to run from the stick)

In the past it was no problem to boot from either but recently I have been having problems booting from the fully-installed live-stick. On older computers both versions work but on newer computers the install-stick (a) is recognised and bootable but the live-stick (with the installed system, b) is not visible.

Any ideas about this? Could it be UEFI-issue? Can/should I change the UEFI-settings? And/or should I set up the live-stick (with the installed system) differently?

Many thanks for any tips that you can give me.

Yours,
Alan in Cologne

[xubuntu] USB and Cameras not loading

I have just hit a problem with using my built-in and USB cameras, and also my memory/USB sticks. First noticed when I had to attend a TEAMS call, and all I could get was the virtualcamera, and then I tried my USB storage device. Now I know they all work and the USB sockets are fine as they all work perfectly in the Windows OS.

Everything is iup to date, and I have tried everything I can find on the various forums.

The two cameras are listed. The BISON is the plug-in USB camera and the ARC is the built-in. Note that in the ABOVE output the Bison is missing. It was there, but disappeared.

[ubuntu] (24.04) WPA Mobile Hotspot to carry OpenVPN Tunneling over

$

I am very new to Linux and installed it specifically for this purpose.

A bit of context:
I am trying to connect my PSP(Playstation Portable) to a server for people to team up in Monster Hunter games (Hunsterverse), it was meant to be used with a PPSSPP emulator, running a OpenVPN connection(I believe that is to tunnel all ports into one so that all players can connect and see each other, but please correct me if I'm wrong) but it should be entirely possible to connect to using an actual PSP.

What I need to end up with:
A mobile hotspot, that carries over the OpenVPN connection, and of course the internet connection from the host. The hotspot needs to be secured via WPA(yes I know it's very insecure, but the PSP only supports WPA encryption), and the SSID should be preferably hidden, I need the hotspot's client(the PSP) to access the internet in the exact same way that the host accesses it.

What I have:
I have set up the OpenVPN connection with the Network Manager plugin. And I have tried setting the mobile hotspot up via linux-router, as well as via linux-wifi-hotspot. The PSP can successfully connect to the Hotspot, and in-game it can connect to the game server, I can join lobbies and it shows that there are multiple people connected. But I cannot see them in the game itself, as if I were alone in the lobby, I believe this is a port forwarding issue, but I don't know how to solve this. (Everything works correctly on the host of course. And I am running Ubuntu through a Virtual Machine, the Hotspot is running through an Asus N13 WiFi dongle, if any of that matters.)

Thanks for any help trying to solve this in advance.

I would like to know if the bug 1396379 was fixed in the 24.04 installer

I wonder if the bug was fixed and if the fix was merged in ubuntu installer. Here is the bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...y/+bug/1396379
The problem was Grub installs itself on the Windows partition (first drive, internal drive) of a dual boot system instead installing itself on the second drive(second drive, external boot Ubuntu drive).

On launchpad is not clear if this bug was fixed. Also is not clear if was merged to some versions of Ubuntu.

At the end of comments if shows something like
Changed in ubiquity (Ubuntu):
status: Fix Released → Confirmed

But there is not marked in green to indicate that the problem was solved.
If I download the latest version of Ubuntu like 24.04, will I have issues with this bug?

[ubuntu] Crashes after upgrading to Ubuntu 22.04.4 LTS

Hi all,

I'm experiencing crashes after upgrading to Ubuntu 22.04.4 LTS. The crashes happen when my laptop is idle for awhile and the screen blanks. When I resume the system, the session has crashed and I need to log in again.

When I upgraded Ubuntu, I faced some incompatibilities between the new kernel version and the packages related to my wifi adapter. I had to downgrade the kernel to version 5.15.0-46-generic to have wifi connectivity again. I'm uncertain whether this could be linked to the crashes. My laptop is a Lenovo Carbon X1 Gen 9.

I'd like to ask for some help regarding this. Also, I'd like to know what sort of information I could provide to help debugging this issue.

Best,
Manuel

[ubuntu] 22.04: cannot get gnome shell extensions to work

Hello Ubuntuers:

I installed the encrypted version of 22.04

I've not been able to get gnome extensions to work.

I saw the claims that gnome extensions do not work with the Firefox snap that comes with the installation. So, I installed firefox from deb and removed the snap.

Here is evidence that only the deb Firefox is installed
Code:

for i in $(pgrep firefox); do cat /proc/$i/cmdline ; echo ; done
Output:
Quote:

output
/usr/lib/firefox/firefox
Then, I updated and upgrded 22.04:
Code:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

... and found my gnome version:
HTML Code:

gnome-shell --version
Output:
Quote:

GNOME Shell 42.9
Then, I installed gnome shell extensions:
Code:

sudo apt remove gnome-shell-extensions
.. and installed the gnome shell extension manager:
HTML Code:

sudo apt install gnome-shell-extension-manager
And, then I rebooted.

When I go to the gnome extensions web site
HTML Code:

https://extensions.gnome.org/
There is an error in a pink dialog box that says, "An unexpected error occurred."

And, I'm not able to install any gnome extensions... either form the web site, nor from the green Extensions app that can be found under "the 3x3 grid of boxes in the lower left corner that is the "Show Applicaions" app.

Can anybody provide a suggestion how I might get gnome extensions to work?

Do you think it may not be working because I'm trying to use it with an encrypted verions of 22.04? I have not had this problem with the unencrypted version.

Thank you,
Old

Problems with appearance and some apps after update 22.04

I recently ran the automatic updates. Immediately after it was obvious ubuntu had forgotten my settings .... it was going through the connect my accounts, etc. as if it was a new install.
Then I tried to fix the appearance, the appearance tab is there but I cannot change anything.
I also notice that my extensions such arcMenu no longer work and my keyboard has defaulted to US instead of UK.

I've not been using Ubuntu that long so dont really know where to start diagnosing this but here is the update log.

Ubuntu and windows sharing permissions

$

I'm having an issue with Windows or Ubuntu permissions and can't remember the fix for this that I found a couple of years ago.
I have a Windows 11 drive shared (everyone).
In Ubuntu I can use file to connect to the drive (permanent connection). In Ubuntu file I can see files, folders, etc.
But I can't write something new to the shared drive.
I seem to remember there was some file in ubuntu that I had to modify or add some lines to that allowed this.
Can anyone point me in the right direction to a document that has instructions for this?
This time I'll document this for future needs :)

Add VPN Button is Disabled

$

When I try and add a Cisco Compatible VPN (vpnc) it lets me enter the VPN information; however, the "Add" button in the top-right is disabled. There is no form feedback indicating that any of the fields are invalid. The button briefly turns green until I switch the `Group password` field to `Store the password only for this user`. The button remains disabled if I switch back to the default `Ask for this password every time`. Clicking the Add button while it's green closes the window but does not store the VPN information. The Network manager says "Not set up" under the VPN header.

I tried searching for an existing issue but the results are all from 2008. Was a regression introduced recently?
