years ago i used to run an HTTP proxy server that was simple to configure and lightweight to run. it was called polipo. it seems to no long be in the repository (its file name is not in the file lists). does anyone know of something simple i could run in its place? i have a current need to run several proxy servers all under 24.04.

Unable to run Atom editor on Ubuntu 24.04
I have installed Ubuntu 24.04 because it is the current LTS release. However I cannot get the atom editor to run. I followed the posted advice on how to install the atom editor on Linux:
sudo snap install atom --classic
I start atom from the terminal, but as soon as I try to open a project the Atom window closes. No error messages appear in the terminal where I started atom. The only relevant messages I can find are highlighed in the following, but I cannot find an explanation of what these messages mean. I assume the last relevant message simply means that the atom process went into an infinite loop.
This suggests that I need a more recent version of the snap than the one in the Canonical repository. Where do I look?

SSO LOGIN - email verification issue.
I registered with the email: <snip> and when logging with SSO there was an email verification with this email in 2 boxes. It would not do anything when clicking submit or whatever was there.
I do have problems with this email not being recognized by website forms with the ".properties" domain.
So I put my other email: <snip> in the 2 boxes and it went through.
So it's not as in the sticky note where I had an old login. This is all brand new today.
So we can clean it up with either email that works on your end, just need to know the next steps?

Why can't I successfully install 24.04 on my Samsung Rf-711?
I'm stuck on the message "reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key."
I have tried installing it a few times now and always get stuck here. The BIOS boot priority is on the SSD where it is installed, and I'm still stuck as mentioned above.

[ubuntu] Ubuntu Studio 22.04 hangs after splash screen with AMD RX 7600 XT at blinking cursor
I changed the video card in my system from an Nvidia card to this AMD GPU, and at first I just tried swapping the card in, which produced the same result.
I've tried installing the official AMDGPU drivers from AMD, and that hasn't resulted in any success.
I can hit alt-F2 and get into terminal mode no problem, but otherwise it just hangs and won't enter the windowing system.
I did an inxi -G and saw that it loads: ati, fbdev, modesetting, radeon, vesa but unloaded:amdgpu, but also gpu:amdgpu.
I have no idea how to fix this and I've tried everything to the extent of my knowledge.
If anyone has any ideas, I'd appreciate it.

[gnome] xdot as a hotkey
Ive written an xdot script that moves a window to another monitor and manipulates the window size. It works flawlessly. I tried to bind the script to an ubuntu hotkey (settings - keyboard - custom) which sometimes works, but mostly doesn't. It will move the window without resize, or resize without move, or something complete different. The cnlt + L key is bound to "/path/to/my/script.sh argument" What could be possible causes for this?

Accessing my old Mint hd
I just installed Ubuntu on my new hard drive, but forgot to backup the Thunderbird data file from Mint, on my old hard drive. I connected the old hd to my computer, but Ubuntu does not recognize it. I have search for directions on mounting another hard drive to my present system, but all of the info assumes it is a fresh empty hd that needs to be partitioned, etc. How can I mount a hd that already has data on it - with the intention of accessing the data?

How to Install Encrypted Ubuntu 24.04 on Multi-Boot MacBook Without Removing Other OS
Hi everyone,
I currently have a MacBook set up with a dual (or triple) boot system, running OSX, Windows, and Ubuntu 22.04. I use rEFInd to choose between the systems.
I now need to install an encrypted version of Ubuntu (preferably Ubuntu 24.04). However, during the installation process, I've only found options to encrypt the disk, which removes all other systems from my MacBook.
How can I install an encrypted version of Ubuntu without removing my existing installations, ensuring that only the Ubuntu partition is encrypted?
Thanks in advance for your help!

Advice on Video Card
Hello
For years I have always used NVidia cards in my Ubuntu PCs (last 10 + years), I found they performed well in gaming and were stable, I had the odd glitch when installing new drivers but was easily sorted
I bought myself a Dell 8960 i9-13900K with 32Gb RAM and an RTX 4080...it works beautifully super fast with latest Ubuntu*BUT* there are only 3 X PCI-E Card Slots and the RTX 4080 is so wide it covers them ALL (cant believe DELL Sold this and also the fact I didn't notice) so I have no free PCI-E slots which is a problem as I cannot install my 10G Fibre Network card and am getting fed up with the slow 1Gb Ethernet speed as I transfer large files to and from my Server
The machine is primarily an all purpose Desktop PC (3 Monitors running Chrome/Gnumeric/VS Code - just every day tasks but I do shunt large ESXI and ISO Files about) but I do play the occasional Steam game
I was thinking of replacing my RTX 4080 with an AMD 7000 GRE which will free up the one slot I need
My question is how good is AMD at gaming on Ubuntu these days (I do know it is a slower card so do expect some performance loss obviously...but it is mostly older games I play eg counterstrike) ...is it Stable and efficient (I last used AMD 7+ years ago with Nouveau drivers I think they were called and the gaming performance was so poor VS NVidia's prop drivers
All advice greatly appreciated
Thanks in advance
Gary

old equipment
I'm interested in the question - there are all sorts of distributions for old machines with low resource consumption. The question is, how do these distros solve the problem of video card drivers? I have an old Asus p5k machine at home, I loaded it with 24.04 lts, and there is a problem with the Nvidia 8800 driver. If before, at the very least, it was possible to edit the xorg file, but now my friend said that now it is almost impossible, you need to change the computer. The free driver certainly works, but everything is fuzzy. Interested to get a comment on this

Nasty regreSSHion bug in OpenSSH puts roughly 700K Linux boxes at risk
Conner Jones writes about CVE-2024-6387 which impacts OpenSSH's server (sshd). We're told Infosec researchers at Qualys discovered the race condition, and how it could be misused by attackers. We're also told of links with the prior CVE-2006-5051 which was patched, but a change back in October 2020 caused this regression. Despite this 'regreSSHion' issue, Qualys still hold the OpenSSH project in high regard. A link to Ubuntu USN-6859-1 security notice is provided for reassurance.

Developer Membership Board Election Results
Robie Basak, on behalf of the Ubuntu Technical Board, gives the results of the Developer Membership Board election. We're told Robie Basak, Simon Quigley and Benjamin Drung will serve for two year terms, and Brian Murray, Utkarsh Gupta, Simon Chopin and Thomas Ward will serve for one year. Lucas Kanashiro, Sebastien Bacher and Łukasz Zemczak have stood down, and are thanked for their service. We are told of some of the machinations due to insufficient nominations, and asked if we have objections to raise them within one week of the announcement.

[kubuntu] No VM will boot.
Hi. I'm running Kubuntu 24.04 LTS. I tried to start a VM of Windows 10 Home 22H2 on it and it returned this error.
"Kernel driver not installed (rc=-1908)

If your system has EFI Secure Boot enabled you may also need to sign the kernel modules (vboxdrv, vboxnetflt, vboxnetadp, vboxpci) before you can load them. Please see your Linux system's documentation for more information.

Anybody know how to fix this? Thank you.

[ubuntu] FIDO2 Yubikey 5 luks fails on Ubuntu 24.04
I was looking to use FIDO2 keys to unlock a LUKS2 partition on a laptop. The Ubuntu 24.04 installation makes it easy to do "whole drive encryption" with LUKS2 with LVM inside, however this defaults to using a passphrase. Part of the use case is to make it easy to decrypt by someone else in the who has access to a FIDO2 key keyed to the laptop and do away with either insecure passphrases or complicated passphrases that nobody can seem to type in right, let alone remember / find when they need it. The thought with the Yubikey is FIDO2 can be used with strong crypto such as ed25519 and if you don't have both the physical key and the simple pin that goes with the key, you can't unlock it. Plus if the physical key gets lost or stolen, 8 failed attempts and the FIDO2 function is locked out on the key. So seems to be a good way to protect data at rest, granted the function to shut down a lost of stolen laptop remotely when it connects to the Internet next is "sold separately". (Something you can do with ESET on Windows, at least for business users, which can be handy, granted that is a TPM2 based solution.)
So anyways what I am hitting with Ubuntu 24.04 specifically when I try to go down this route is:
1. When I generate key with the command:
I see the luks2 headers in the cryptsetup luksDump command, but I don't see any keys on the Yubikey 5 with the ykman fido list command. I know that fido u2f keys won't show, but this is supposed to be all fido2 here, so should show up. I can see other fido2 keys on Yubikeys with known fido2 keys on them, so I am doing the listing right.
Something of note is I am not asked for the pin when adding. Another thing that is bugging me is when I register on websites and with ssh, I can label each entry on the FIDO2 key, but I don't see any option to do this with the systemd-cryptenroll command. (The Yubikey 5 keys are working great for FIDO2 based MFA on ssh on Ubuntu 22.04 by the way. Quick and easy to setup and works just as it should and everything validates as correct when I check.)
2. To make sure I can see the prompt for the pin, I stripped out the splash screen from grub. Thought I would point this out to show I am making sure I am seeing only text on boot and so am not missing anything.
3. initramfs does not recognize the fido2 option in /etc/crypttab. So I cannot use the default initramfs command. Other people trying this use dracut, so I gave that a whirl.
4. Dracut fails to boot the system after following all instructions including hacks to get it to include appropriate fido2 libraries. It seems it doesn't even attempt to unlock the luks partition at boot, but instead goes straight to attempting to mount the LVM volume inside, so hangs and then fails. I actually played with this some in Ubuntu 22.04 and this worked with the same instructions, but I failed on getting the FIDO2 key to unlock the drive. Instead after prompting me for the FIDO2 key, it prompted me for the passphrase. So this seems to be a regression as I made it further in Ubuntu 22.04 than I did in 24.04, granted there were other hoops I had to jump through for 22.04 such as converting the luks1 partition into a luks2 partition.
5. Booting off of a recovery drive (Ubuntu 24.04 installer image), I tried to open the luks partition with the FIDO2 key. It prompts for the pin and has me do the presence detect, but then fails to unlock the partition. I think this goes back to #1 where it apparently fails to put a key on the Yubikey 5 key, so how is it supposed to unlock anything without that key entry? Of course unlocking with a passphrase works. I tried dorking around with dracut, but cannot seem to get around the regression in #4.
6. The only way I seem to be able to get the system to boot on its own is to switch it back to using the default initramfs tool and regenerate the initramfs file from this on the recovery boot. Granted, I was able to get the system to boot again. It is just it doesn't recognize the fido option and so never prompts to even try to unlock with the fido2 key.
7. The literature I have read and experiments I have done point to you cannot have 2 or more FIDO2 keys registered. Apparently the FIDO2 option is just ignored if you have two or more FIDO2 entries. This goes against the notion of redundancy and especially for the case of somebody else having a FIDO2 key to unlock the drive with.
So anyways what I am hitting with Ubuntu 24.04 specifically when I try to go down this route is:
1. When I generate key with the command:
Code:
systemd-cryptenroll --fido2-device=auto --fido2-credential-algorithm=eddsa --fido2-with-client-pin=yes /dev/nvme0n1p8
Something of note is I am not asked for the pin when adding. [ubuntu] Compiling a Kernel for the uConsole
Hi,
I want to use Ubuntu Noble in my uConsole.
In order to do this, I have to recompile the kernel, adding the drivers for the custom hardware of the device. [Attachment #1]
I am using this guide to compile the kernel:
https://davidaugustat.com/linux/how-...rnel-on-ubuntu
Then I want to build the .deb packages with the kernel, the headers, and the firmware.
Would you help me with this process? :-)

Intel wifi card BC200 not working after suspend on Ubuntu 24.04
After booting Ubuntu 24.04, everything related to the intel BC200 wifi works as expected.
https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/TsRP57mnxt/
After a suspend / wakeup the wifi card is still visible in NetworkManager, but no SSID's are shown.
https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/j3M6GzJWc9/
The same happens, if after a fresh start with a working wifi I unload + load the iwlwifi module by calling
I tried the following thinks without success to get it running without the need of performing a restart:
It is interesting, that the command `iw dev wlo1 scan` shows the up to date list of SSID's as expected. So it seems, that the network card is working but the network manager is not able to use it... so I don't know if probably some initialization is missed after the reload of iwlwifi.
I'm using a fresh 24.04 Ubuntu installation.
Which other thinks can I try to find out the root cause or a workaround of that issue?

It is interesting, that the command `iw dev wlo1 scan` shows the up to date list of SSID's as expected. So it seems, that the network card is working but the network manager is not able to use it... so I don't know if probably some initialization is missed after the reload of iwlwifi.
I'm using a fresh 24.04 Ubuntu installation.
