There are 2 SSD's with this laptop, one internal I use to boot to Windows, the other has Kubuntu on it. I can usually use Dolphin to navigate the internal/Windows drive , but now it is giving an error

Quote:

An error occurred while accessing '237.9 GiB Internal Drive (nvme0n1p3)', the system responded: The requested operation has failed: Error mounting /dev/nvme0n1p3 at /media/*****/******
: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/nvme0n1p3, missing codepage or helper program, or other error
The mount command shows it as

Quote:

/dev/nvme0n1p1 on /boot/efi type vfat (rw,relatime,fmask=0077,dmask=0077,codepage=437,io charset=iso8859-1,shortname=mixed,errors=remount-ro)
I can do a ls from the terminal

Code:

$ ls -al /dev/nvme0n1p1
Quote:

brw-rw---- 1 root disk 259, 1 Jul 5 10:55 /dev/nvme0n1p1
and also ..

$ ls -al /dev/nvme0n1p3
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 259, 3 Jul 5 10:55 /dev/nvme0n1p3

I can display both the SSD's in KDE Partion Manager. This journal entry is concerning ..

[ubuntu] after USG setup, login does not check for Yubikey anymore

Hi Everyone,

I just installed USG. https://ubuntu.com/security/certifications/docs/usg and did the CIS workstation level 2 Fix. After that my login does not check for my YubiKey anymore. The pam module settings as instructed by Yubi were not modified by USG. And the required packages for Yubikey were not un-installed. I even removed and re-installed. Still no joy. So I don't know why Yubikey doesn't work now.

Any clues ?

Thanks

[ubuntu] Files manager shows no files but ls lists many

I'm running 22.04.

According to the Files graphical file manager, the BACKUP directory on my external HDD is completely empty (1st attachment).

According to ls -a it's got lots of files, some of which, weirdly, cannot be listed, because they not exist (2nd attachment, showing the last few dozen of output).

When I try to delete any of the files, I get a "No such file or directory" error.

Which, if either, is correct? How do I get them both to be correct?

[ubuntu] Install gconftool in Ubuntu 24.04

Hello, I'm new to the forum and I don't know if this is the section for the question, sorry if I don't know, I'm trying to install a skin in bash to add a new theme to the system console but when I run the script with the command "sudo bash script.sh" I receive the error "gconftool: order not found", I tried searching several sites on the subject and I can't find how to install it or I don't know if I delete it in this version of the Ubuntu 24.04 system, could someone help me install it? Can I share the link to the github repository that has the bash in case the error is there?

[gnome] Adjust screen brightness increment/decrement value

$

I have a ThinkPad laptop with an OLED screen.

I can adjust the brightness with function keys as expected, however the adjustment lacks fidelity. What I mean is, the lowest (dimmest) two brightness settings are vastly different (extremely dim or too bright). In technical terms, "cat /sys/class/backlight/amdgpu_bl1/brightness" returns "2" on the lowest setting, but "14" on the next available brightness setting.

I can, for example, "echo 4 > /sys/class/backlight/amdgpu_bl1/brightness" to get the desired brightness in between those values, but obviously I would prefer to use the function keys.

Can I adjust the value the brightness is incremented/decremented by? I'm using GNOME, but willing to switch window managers if this isn't feasible here.

[SOLVED] Effectively disable one of two Wi-Fi cards?

$

Using Xubuntu 22.04 on a desktop computer with two Wi-Fi+Bluetooth cards (one built in, the other is PCIe). I would like to (primarily) use the PCIe card for Wi-Fi and the built-in card for Bluetooth, and disable other wireless functionality when not in use.

For Bluetooth this is workable after backporting blueman 2.4.2. Having trouble doing this with Wi-Fi.

Tried to soft-block the individual unused Wi-Fi device with rfkill in Terminal, but turns out NetworkManager treats this state as if all Wi-Fi radios were soft-blocked, and there is no way to work around it.

While investigating I ran the wireless-info script (not posting the full result because it contains quite a bit of personal information - not just my personal info about my system/network, but also neighbors' real names). The wireless-info.txt shows both of my Wi-Fi devices use the iwlwifi kernel module, so blacklisting a kernel module isn't an option.

Another idea that came up in search is to set the unused Wi-Fi card as unmanaged in NetworkManager. If I do that, would the card do nothing unless I explicitly use it (i.e. not transmit or receive anything, not adding Wi-Fi noise in the proximity of my other card)?

As you will see, there are constant connection attempts made between my new Samsung S24 mobile phone and my Xubuntu PC via Bluetooth.

The first notification announces a connection made and 1 second later a second notification announces a disconnection. This is repeated every few seconds. At time is it takes away the cursor focus.

I have been in touch with Samsung support and they have tried to cure the problem assuming it is a phone problem (I think it is), but they have failed to find anything other than the phone is paired with my PC.

I know over the years I have found that Ubuntu Bluetooth can be flaky. (Maybe my fault :frown: )

I have been asked if it could be the PC trying to connect to the phone. Can anyone assist with this?

I have a server with Ubuntu 22.04 Jammy, and I am trying to upgrade to 24.04 using do-release-upgrade just as I did from version 20.04 to 22.04. But it always tells me that there is no version available.
Can someone tell me

[ubuntu] Boot loader missing after disk partition

Hello, I wanted to create a disk partition for a VM with sudo fdisk but accidentally used EFI partition type and i think it became bootable and deleted some other disk partitions (some error messages poppep up that said it failed to delete some other disk partitions).
After restarting it loaded into grub and /boot is missing.
Tried using Boot repair iso but it just gave me the black screen with flashing underscore.
Loaded into ubuntu with an usb and got Boot repair from terminal but it's missing the Recommended Repair option.
Here's the summary file, any help is appreciated.

I am currently playing with installing ubuntu desktop 22.04.2 on a spare machine I have after I went M.2 on my Unraid server

It is right now giving me the choice of the filesystem I have on the m.2 drive, LVM or ZFS
which one do I choose for ease of putting new/bigger disks in the server ?

I am debating with my self if I should run the desktop version of Ubuntu, or the dedicated server version
It will purely be a backup server

[SOLVED] Newby Installation Iaaue

I have not used a Linux o/s for over 10 years and was never had much knowledge of how it works, but I need a Windows image server for my business and found Fog Project and it requires a linux o/s be installed to be able to install Fog. I planned on a dual boot system and had already installed Windows 10 Pro and left an unused partition for Ubuntu. The instructions said to install Ubuntu after shrinking the Windows partition, but since I already had a large unused partition I just started the install. I did tell it to install Ubuntu and keep the Windows install. It did not ask me where to install so I assumed it would use the empty partition. After finishing the install and rebooting I did not see the Choose O/S message and now I think I have lost the Windows install. I don't really need Windows on this PC but I do need to be able to connect remotely to Ubuntu from a Windows PC and found instructions stating to use either the name or IP address to connect. Using either does not find the new install in remote desktop although I can ping the PC. Can anyone tell me how to adjust the security settings to allow a remote connection?
