Ubuntu 20.04 looks okay - but it has wrong version of Mono Runtime :(

Hello everyone,

I am sorry for that. I am very sad because Ubuntu Team doesn't understand me because Mono 6.8.0 is not stable version because mkbundle generates successful but you cannot get loading embedded bundled assembly in native bundled executable files. So sad.I really explain you because you don't listen me - I am very disappointed because Ubuntu Team has wrong version of Mono. Please believe me! I want help you. Mono 5.20.1.19 is very stable version since I have tested current version. Please check which latest version is stable if you don't believe me. Please tell me safe which version is stable like 6.4.0 or before or later?

But Mono 6.8.0 has unusable version if you use mkbundle but it is really unusable version and you cannot use mkbundle if you have generated executable file.

Please listen me honestly! I really want help you but I am sorry for that because I am maybe angry because Ubuntu 20.04 went wrong. If C# developers cannot get development. like Ubuntu 20.04 bans C# development. I thought C# developers are shocking like Ubuntu 20.04 fails Mono Runtime. I would like to downgrade to Mono 5.20.1.19 and please add "-no-pie" If you use x86_64 / amd64 on Ubuntu than executable will be clickable.

Thank you for understanding and supporting my acceptance!

Kind regards and stay safe at home!

[server] USB modem installation

Hello All,
I am new to this forum. I am new to any forum at all.
I know that this topic was discussed many times but I could not find a relevant thread or the information is missing.

I have a USB modem - the most popular - Huawei E3372 and it works great on a desktop installation of my new ubuntu 20.4 but... it does not work on the ubunto 20.4 server instance. I have no idea what is the matter.

Here below is the output from syslog on the server:

Thanks for any support.

BTW: I have tried to find how the procedure of the new USB device (modem) installation looks like. What is the first step, the second. Which process comes first, how to debug it etc. Could anyone redirect me to relevant source, please?

How to Create a "Virtual Microphone" for Google Meet or other software

$

Hi everyone,
Someone asked how to do this in 2016 but the thread is closed. I found bits and pieces of the answer in other posts, but here is my solution all put together in case someone else has the same objective.
I want to pipe background music from an mp3 file or maybe youtube to a google meet (used to be called hangouts). In theory this should be easy using pavucontrol but the old desktop computer I'm using doesn't have a microphone. If google meet doesn't see a microphone then it automatically mutes all audio. The easiest solution is to plug an old microphone into the microphone port on the back of the computer but I didn't have an old microphone. So here is the software "recipe". This is done on a clean Ubuntu 20.04 Desktop install with pavucontrol installed.

1. Start pavucontrol, firefox or chrome, whatever software is playing the music - lets say rhythmbox. Log in to the meet and start your background music.

2. Go to pavucontrol and check the configuration tab. There should be one sound card. If no speakers or microphones are connected then it should say Profile: Off.

3. Google Meet will mute the microphone if it can't find a microphone device. This prevents any sound from playing, even if we try to stream something from another sound source on the PC. It is necessary to trick Google Meet into thinking that a microphone is present. We do this by installing the ALSA loopback device. This creates a virtual sound card with a virtual micophone. From a superuser terminal use this command:

# modprobe snd-aloop

4. Go back to pavucontrol. Under the configuration tab there should now be a second built in sound card. Change the new sound card's profile to analog stereo input. When you do this google meet should automatically detect the fake microphone and unmute your audio. So go to your meet, make sure audio is unmuted.

5. Go back to pavucontrol. Check the playback tab. The level meter should show sound generated from your sound source. That's good. Leave it alone.

6. Change to the Recording tab. You should see "Chrome input: RecordStream from" at the left side (or firefox input, depends which browser you use for meet). On the corresponding right side change the source to Monitor of Dummy Output.

7. That's it,

It is also possible to set the configuration of the second sound card to Analog Stereo Duplex then set the recording source to Monitor of Built-in Audio Analog Stereo. But AFAIK google meet doesn't do stereo.

Audio feedback issue

First off, I am running a Dell Inspiron I3670 with a i5-9400 2.90 GHz processor and 12 GB of RAM. I am running the new Ubuntu MATE 20.04 LTS.

I also have an internal HDA-Intel PCH sound card.

I am having a strange problem. Whenever I launch any application that uses audio (VLC, Audacity, Youtube, et. al.) before the audio starts I get a very loud bass thump. It's like some kind of weird feedback. Any idea how I might eliminate this?

Upgrade strategy (incl. fixing UEFI / X / USB issues)

$

Hi

I have been updating my system for a few years now - currently on 19.10 and like to do a clean install of 20.04
Reason is I like to keep using an LTS version. My main use of the system is for browsing, multimedia and have a VM image of 16.04 Ubuntu that I also like to upgrade to 20.04

My desktop has issues automatically starting X (always hangs and I need to select a new session and startx).
Also another more annoying issue because of an UEFI problem I always need to start with a rEFInd boot disk. A while ago I deleted some apparently important boot information and are not able to automatically boot Ubuntu anymore.
rEFInd boot disk has the UEFI boot information stored that is needed to boot.
Another issue is with USB drives that are not always automatically recognized, sometimes I need to reconnect them or switch to another USB port.

So my backup strategy will be:

1. Backup my home directory
2. Backup my Browser profiles
3. Backup some of the most important files and directories (including terminal history - contains some very useful CLI)
4. Back-Up my VM image

Then

1. Fix the UEFI issue if needed. I assume a clean Ubuntu install not fix it
2. Install 20.04 (hope this fixes the issue with X and USB)
3. Restore browser profiles
4. Restore files/directories/terminal history
5. Upgrade VM image from 16.04 - 18-04 to 20-4

So no questions yet but when I run into issues I will use this post. Feel free to comment on my strategy.

[ubuntu] Removal of dead icons

Fairly novice user of Ubuntu here - I've got a number of icons in the icon shortcut bar (see attachment) along the bottom of the screen that I can't seem to kill. They're all from the same program (ncview) and when I right click and quit, it does nothing.

(Long story, but I don't want to reboot as I'm logged in remotely and not sure my current remote access can cope with a reboot!)

Just wondering if there was a simple way to remove all these icons - I can't seem to find any processes to kill, either.

Many thanks

[ubuntu] Top bar issues on Ubuntu 20.04 (show app and volume)

Hi,
Everything used to work fine on Ubuntu 18.04.
Then I made a clean OS install, preserving my home directory.
Now I have 2 major (for me) issues.

1. When I open several applications, they only shown at the top bar as icons without description.
Like if I open several VLC videos, I only see several icons, but not their "clickable app with description", and firefox for some reason I only see at the left side panel, but not on top.
There was supposed to be a gnome3 extension for this...
It used to work on Ubuntu 18.04

2. when I hover over the volume icon and spin the mouse wheel I see that the sound icon goes up. however I no longer see the indication bar/slider (to see how much it goes up/down).
However when I click the volume icon and spin the mouse wheel, I do see it, along with the whole panel.
Can I make it work so I will see the volume bar/slider even when I only hoover over the volume and spin the mouse wheel?
it used to work on Ubuntu 18.04.

Hello
I have a big problem.Yesterday I installed Ubuntu on my chromebook and everything works fine but sound is not. Like I said earlier Dummy Output , I spent about 14h trying to fix it in all ways - nothing helped. I have updated everything , speakers are working on chromeOS and headphone jack too. What do you think about changing distribution ? Not based on debian ?

[ubuntu] Unable to convert OpenSSH private key to private key PEM!

Howdy, everybody,

I'm having a wrath-inspiring problem converting a private OpenSSH (SSH2) key to a private PEM file. I have two Android devices which need a PEM file to access the OpenSSH server on my Ubuntu 20.04 LTS box, and OpenSSL can't convert SSH2 keys. Additionally, ssh-keygen only generates public key conversions.

In Ubuntu 18.04, I was able to use OpenSSL to convert id_rsa to a private PEM, but no longer can. None of the (old) solutions I've managed to find online work, either. I'm completely stumped. Since I access the server remotely, password authentication is out of the question.

I'd greatly appreciate a working solution to this problem that doesn't require installing Wine and PuTTY. Can anybody help?

Thank you in advance.

I want to update to Ubuntu 20.04LTS from 18.04.4LTS -- My first thought was to check software updater, but I keep getting a strange message about checking my Internet Connection.

Screenshot from 2020-04-26 11-58-05.png

I get regular updates from other bits of software that is installed and on a regular basis, but I don't know why I'm not being notified that 20.04LTS is available.

Any thoughts about how I would go about troubleshooting this issue?

Thanks,

Plank is not available in Gnome Software ?

Hello,

As said in the title, Plank is not available in Gnome Software whereas it is into Ubuntu repositories and you can install it with command lines or Synaptic.
See screen:

https://tugaleres.files.wordpress.co...l-manquant.png

Also, Synaptic is another example of missing softwares in Gnome Software if I remember well.
I guess there are some others but I didn't check all softwares :)

Version: Xubuntu 20.04 LTS

Ps : I'm not sure this the good place for a bug report, so feel free to move it if needed.
My main purpose is to report that in order to fix it because it seems really strange to not find a software that should be available.

Unable to mount raid.

I just did a clean install of ubuntu 20.04 on my system (I used to have 16.04).
My system has 4 harddrives:
/dev/sdb contains the system software (/boot and /).
/dev/sda contains the home directory of the only user.
/dev/md0 is a raid, with physical drives /dev/sdc and /dev/sdd.

I can no longer mount the raid device. Where is the information stored that tells the OS that /dev/sdc and /dev/sdd are a raid?
Since installation, I booted from a clone of /dev/sdb before the upgrade, and the raid mounts properly.

I just upgraded to Ubuntu 20.04 and there is a very odd thing that keeps happening when I move my cursor around on the desktop. I'm attaching a picture. This goes away if I disable animations in GNOME Tweaks but doing that makes cursor movement extremely slow and jerky and makes the system unusable. What can I do to fix this?
