[ubuntu] trying to do a late upgrade from 14.04 to 16.04

$

I have been slack in updating and the Software & Updates no longer offers an update beyond my last update to 14.04.
I have tried a number of the suggestions on the Forum but they are all years old and I think assume that 16.04 is the latest update. I have tried various approaches but have gotten nowhere. It seems that at this stage, there is no easy way to update from 14.04 to any of the newer releases.
Any suggestions?

[xubuntu] Desktop lost

Xubuntu 20.04

I installed Cairo Dock (with Synaptic) and it just froze on my desktop. So, I uninstalled it.

It took with it my desktop. Left with just a black screen. No wallpaper available in settings and just a very basic 'x' for the mouse cursor. It does however have the top panel.

I tried to get it back for a couple of hours and then decided on a re-install.

I have a separate Home folder.

After a fresh install, the situation is the same, except that I have no mouse all (not even a hidden one).

I can not use terminal as it won't accept any characters that I type.

Everything is working fine in the live USB that I am using that to access the forum.

Is the new install picking up an old configuration?

Thanks!

[ubuntu] lvm raid0 logical volume inactive

I tested a disk partitioning scheme on Virtualbox using Ubuntu 18.04 before reinstalling my laptop. Hind sight now has taught me that I should've repeated the exercise with 20.04 when it came out rather than assuming 20.04 would be the same or better than 18.04 in this regard.

I'm trying to work out why an LV is recorded as inactive when booting (either post install or from a live USB stick).

Some output:
<TBC: copy from live session>

I just recently upgraded to Ubuntu 20.04 LTS, and I noticed that the notification and calendar area takes too much space in my screen. When I clicked on it, it almost occupies half of my screen. How can I make it smaller.
and also the text size of the notification.

BluRay playback issue after fresh installation of Ubuntu 20.04 - lack of AACS file

After switching to Ubuntu 20.04 Focal Fossa I've encountered an issue with Blu Ray playback in VLC - lack of AACS configuration file.
Such a problem didn't occur in previous distros (19.10 & 19.04), in which I didn't have to do anything with AACS.

I suppose I installed everything that could be necessary to BluRay/DVD playback.

In Software & Updates > Ubuntu Software I've checked: main, universe, restricted and multiverse.

Of course I've done apt install ubuntu-restricted-extras:
Code:

ubuntu-restricted-addons/focal,now 26 amd64 [zainstalowany]
ubuntu-restricted-extras/focal,now 67 amd64 [zainstalowany]

Additionally, I installed all libraries that could be related to disk playback:

What should I do to enable BluRay playback?
I tried to download http://vlc-bluray.whoknowsmy.name/files/KEYDB.cfg , but I have a major security objections about such workaround.

By the way, on the BluRay disk itself, there're AACS and CERTIFICATE directories - could we use their own content to enable playback?

[ubuntu] No more smb access after migration to UBUNTU 20.04 from UBUNTU 19.10

Hello everyone,
I no longer have access to my devices (NAS and other pcs - windows) from Nautilus. The command smb://IP address doesn't work anymore since the upgrade.

I tried to change the parameter "client max protocol = NT1" in client max protocol = NT1 since my NAS is still in smb1 version. But without change, I can't navigate the network using smb, but I can do it with AFP.
I don't know if this will be useful but I also added "/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/gnome-vfs-2.0/moduleslibsmb.so" and modified
"/etc/gnome-vfs-2.0/modules/extra-modules.conf" to account for smb in nautilus. I can browse the Windows network again, but I can't access my files, just the share folder.
To get around the problem I went through an fstab mount, it works but it's less convenient and the login is slower.
Hopefully someone will be able to help me.
Thanks in advance.Sélection_011.png

[ubuntu] 20.04 desktop automated install?

$

At work, we generate OS images for our automated SW testing suites. Now that Ubuntu 20.04 is out, we need to get an image of that. Right now we are trying to automate the image creation through Proxmox+Packer+Ansible, but I'm having some trouble finding out how to automate the install for 20.04 desktop. For 18.04 we used the mini iso with a kickstart file, but I don't see a mini iso for 20.04. Is there a way to automate the desktop iso installer?
Thanks!

Updated to 20.04 and switch from headset to internal mic broke

Hi,

I just updated to 20.04 from 19.10 and before the update I could unplug my headset (uses regular 3.5mm jack) and ubuntu/pulse would automatically switch to the internal speakers and microphone. Now it only switches to the internal speakers and not the internal microphone.

Does anyone now where to begin to troubleshoot this?

Cheers

I want to record audio output from a single application. I know I can do this by creating a null-sink and recording the monitor but is there a way to record application audio without having to set up a virtual sink and loopback?

[ubuntu] Cisco AM10 wifi adapter not working on Ubuntu 20.04

$

I booted up the liveUSB with Ubuntu 20.04 on my desktop with a Cisco AM10 USB wifi adapter plugged in. But looks like the wifi adapter is not detected.

Its weird since I previously had 18.04 running on this machine, and I was using this AM10 USB adapter. To confirm I also booted a liveUSB with 18.04.1 and it clearly detects the AM10 as a wifi adapter and is able to connect to my wireless network.

Anyone know if Ubuntu has removed support for this wifi adapter? Anyone any ideas?

[kubuntu] No grub menu after Boot Repair

$

Hello guys&gals,

I'm afraid that I can't find an answer online for this situation I encountered.

Initial setup: Ubuntu 18.04, Windows 10, dual boot, grub menu with Ubuntu, Advanced, Windows as options. One Ubuntu boot partition, one root. UEFI system.

Repartitioned the drive to get rid of the separate boot partition because I hate having to clean it up all the time due to it being small.

I have restored a Kubuntu 20.04 backup (fsarchiver) from another laptop to avoid setting/installing everything from scratch. Changed partition UUID and fstab UUID and hostname.

Ran Boot Repair from a Lubuntu 18.04 usb stick.

In BIOS/UEFI I have ubuntu first, then windows, as boot options. They both run fine, I can get in both OSes via BIOS menu.

But with the "ubuntu" boot option I was expecting to be greeted by the familiar default 10 seconds waiting Grub menu, which I don't see at all.

Instead the screen is black, and after some seconds (possibly 10, but it's hard to say) Kubuntu starts. I want the grub menu back, and nothing I've tried helped. Sorry, but I can't recall all the stuff I attempted. Played around with the grub resolution, hidden timeout option etc. Nothing worked, though I may have done it wrong. To know the correct resolutions I would need access to Grub, and I don't have it.

If anybody could point me in the right direction, I would be really grateful. Thanks!

Hey,

Sorry if this is completely expected behaviour.

Upon a fresh install of transmission-daemon from Ubuntu repository, transmission will establish numerous (60+) outgoing connections to servers across the world.

No torrents have been added and I cannot understand why on earth that many servers are needed for telemetry.

A sample of the connections are as such:

udp ubuntu 51413 173.212.202.22 51459
udp ubuntu 51413 107.242.124.37 32992
udp ubuntu 51413 62.210.81.215 51413
udp ubuntu 51413 219.79.69.147 6881
udp ubuntu 51413 79.161.66.164 44558
udp ubuntu 51413 175.213.251.5 32205
udp ubuntu 51413 187.39.253.3 40952
udp ubuntu 51413 109.120.8.208 6881
udp ubuntu 51413 87.149.245.172 6881
udp ubuntu 51413 5.39.226.188 59777
udp ubuntu 51413 89.103.9.107 49643
udp ubuntu 51413 107.242.124.37 32992
udp ubuntu 51413 121.165.57.113 61098

I'm sure this is most likely legitimate behaviour but thought I would check. The other alternative is pretty crazy to think of.

Kind regards,
Tom

[kubuntu] Cannot install Kubuntu on VirtualBox

Hey I am trying to install Kubuntu for the first time on VirtualBox 6.1.6. I have installed Kali Linux and Windows 7 on VirtualBox with no problem but when I try to install Kubuntu 20.04, the screen turns on with the Kubuntu logo and stays like that forever. When I try to install Kubuntu 19.10, it acts as though it doesn't sense the ISO file and displays a blank screen with a blinking cursor that doesn't respond to anything. In both instances it is running with 6gb of ram, 2 cores, and 64mb of video memory. The downloads are from the official Kubuntu site. I have scoured the web and found nothing so if someone has some suggestions I would much appreciate it. My friend has dual booted Kubuntu 20.04 from the official site with no problem, just a note.

Clementine thrashes my disk on Kubuntu 20.04

$

I installed Kubuntu 20.04 as soon as it became official. I set up Clementine as my music player, and installed all the Studio tools.

I have all my music on an external SSD attached through a "toaster", external dock with space for 2 drives as well as extra card and USB ports. It worked fine the first time I used it (which, incidentally, was before I installed the Studio tools).

This morning I tried to play something and it just thrashed the heck out of the SSD, with more notifications than I could keep up with and, eventually, it said that my disk was empty. I booted to another distro (I have 6 on this machine), pulled the drive out of the toaster, and ran my backups. As soon as I pulled the other drive, the drive with my music on it showed up again with all the files. I took the opportunity to make sure my other backup drive was up to date, and tried again. Same thing. It works fine in Mint 19.3, OpenMandria Lx 4.1, Bodhi 5.1.0, and I didn't try either of the other two. It's either a Clementine issue or a Kubuntu 20.04 issue, I'm not sure which (I don't use Clementine on my other distros).

Ay help would be appreciated.
